I first met Phil Vischer, the creator of VeggieTales, at a writers conference in Denver. He had just released his first “What’s in the Bible?” DVD from his new company, JellyTelly. As a longtime fan of Bob and Larry, I was really looking forward to meeting Phil. But I had no idea what he had to say was specifically for me.
Phil spoke twice during that conference. He said he wanted to make a difference in the world. He told the story of how he grew VeggieTales to astounding success only to lose it ten years later. He spoke of how his dream became the most important aspect of his life, how his pride grew with the company, how each project just never seemed to be enough. He reminded us that we are not the sum of our achievements. “I realized my total preoccupation with my own dreams and ideas had rendered me virtually useless to the people around me,” he said in his book Me, Myself, & Bob.
What I learned that weekend was the importance of balancing dreams with reality. Be passionate about your dream, but don’t let it consume you.
