Writers are inspired by all sorts of things; landscapes, public figures, historical events. My friend Susan so enjoyed her trip to Italy that she set her newest book there, The Girl in the Glass. Because inspiration can come anywhere, anytime, I quickly learned the convenience of keeping a notebook (and multiple pens) in my purse. I’ve heard this tip recommended by several professionals.
For me, the biggest inspiration has been music of all kinds. Classics from the 1980’s, love songs by Celine Dion or Chicago, popular music by Nickleback or Jordin Sparks, soundtracks like Les Mis, Lord of the Rings, and even Barbie and High School Musical! Ideas have also come to me via movies, books, and things people have said. The oddest place inspiration struck was at church. One morning Pastor Tony said something that perfectly fit one of my characters, so I dug my notebook out and jotted down the thought before I lost it.
Keep a notebook handy – you’ll be glad you did!
